The Simple Anti-Aging Skincare Routine for Your 40s (Step by Step)
Your 40s are when skin starts to change in ways you can actually see: it gets drier, it bounces back more slowly, and fine lines stop disappearing by lunchtime. The good news is that the routine that works best at this stage is not complicated. A few proven steps, used consistently, beat a crowded shelf of products you use once a week.
Here is the routine we recommend, step by step, with what each product does and what you can skip.
Why skin changes in your 40s
Collagen production slows down gradually from your 20s, and by your 40s the difference becomes visible as softer contours and deeper lines. As you approach perimenopause, falling estrogen levels can also make skin drier and thinner. Years of sun exposure show up as uneven tone and dark spots.
You can’t stop these changes, but the right routine can make skin look smoother, brighter and more hydrated, and protect it from further damage.
Your morning routine (4 steps)
Step 1: Gentle cleanser
In the morning, a mild, non-foaming cleanser (or even just lukewarm water if your skin is very dry) is enough. Harsh, squeaky-clean cleansers strip the oils that mature skin needs.
Step 2: Vitamin C serum
Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps brighten skin and even out tone over time. It works best in the morning, under sunscreen, where it adds an extra layer of defense against environmental stress. Look for a formula in an opaque, airtight bottle, since vitamin C breaks down with light and air.
Step 3: Moisturizer
Choose a moisturizer with ingredients that support the skin barrier, like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, glycerin or peptides. If your skin feels tight by midday, it’s a sign you need something richer.
Step 4: Sunscreen, every single day
If you only do one thing, make it this. Daily sun protection is the most effective way to prevent new wrinkles and dark spots. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Apply it to your face, neck and the back of your hands, even on cloudy days.
Your evening routine (3 steps)
Step 1: Cleanse (twice if you wear makeup)
At night, remove sunscreen and makeup completely. A cleansing balm or oil followed by your gentle cleanser works well and doesn’t dry out the skin.
Step 2: Retinoid (start slowly)
Retinol and other retinoids are the most studied ingredients for the look of fine lines and uneven texture. Start with a low-strength retinol two or three nights a week, then increase as your skin adjusts. Some dryness or flaking in the first weeks is normal; real burning or redness is a sign to slow down. Most people need about 12 weeks to see a difference.
If your skin is very sensitive, bakuchiol is a gentler plant-based alternative. We compare the two in Retinol vs. Bakuchiol: Which Is Better for Mature, Sensitive Skin?
Skip retinoids if you are pregnant, trying to conceive or nursing.
Step 3: Night cream
A richer cream at night helps lock in moisture while you sleep. On retinol nights, applying moisturizer after the retinol helps reduce irritation.
Once or twice a week
- Gentle exfoliation: a mild AHA (like lactic or glycolic acid) once or twice a week helps with dullness. Don’t use it on the same night as your retinol.
- Hydrating mask: a nice extra when skin feels tight, especially in winter.
What you can skip
- Toners that sting: alcohol-heavy toners can dry out mature skin.
- Ten serums at once: layering too many actives increases the chance of irritation and makes it hard to know what works.
- Products that promise to “erase” wrinkles: cosmetics can improve how skin looks and feels, but they don’t work like medical treatments.
Don’t forget your neck and chest
The skin on your neck and chest is thinner and gets a lot of sun. Extend your sunscreen, serum and moisturizer down to your collarbones every time.
How long until you see results?
Hydration improves in days. Brightness from vitamin C usually takes a few weeks. Changes in fine lines and texture from retinoids take about three months of consistent use. Take a photo in the same light on day one so you can compare.
The bottom line
A great routine in your 40s is short: cleanse, vitamin C, moisturize and protect in the morning; cleanse, retinoid and moisturize at night. Consistency matters more than the number of products.
